Five Things We Learned From The Opening weekend of the new season - Premier League

The Premier League returned with bang as Arsenal staged a thrilling fightback to beat Leicester, champions Chelsea suffered a shock defeat against Burnley and Romelu Lukaku marked his Manchester United debut with a brace in their rout of West Ham.

Here is a look at five things we learned from the opening weekend of the new season:

Problems mount for Conte
Throughout a turbulent close-season, Antonio Conte had grown increasingly fraught as Chelsea failed to deliver his transfer targets, while allowing several players to leave.

The Chelsea boss claimed defending the title would be the toughest test of his career and Conte’s worst fears were confirmed in Saturday’s stunning 3-2 home defeat against Burnley.

Rocked by Gary Cahill’s early red card, Chelsea crumbled as Burnley scored three times in the first half with hardly any resistence from the lacklustre champions.

Goals from Alvaro Morata and David Luiz put a flattering gloss on the score, but, with Cesc Fabregas also sent off, Conte’s already depleted squad will be even more under-manned due to suspensions.

“We lost our composure. We have to improve a lot on this aspect because there was the rest of the game to try to do our best,” he grumbled.

Perfectionist Guardiola not satisfied
After Manchester City’s trophyless first season under boss Pep Guardiola, the Spaniard vowed to learn from his failed English exam.

Guardiola’s main takeaway from City’s flop last term was his side must be more ruthless in the penalty area, while matching their rivals’ work rate.

Saturday’s 2-0 win at Brighton was a step in the right direction, but the City boss warned his players he still isn’t satisfied.

Sergio Aguero made the breakthrough after 70 minutes and Lewis Dunk’s own goal doubled City’s advantage five minutes later, yet Guardiola said:

“We have to learn to attack better. “Last season we ran a lot but in the boxes we were not good. Hopefully in the future we can be more accurate.”

Man United look like title contenders
It is very early days, but Manchester United’s emphatic 4-0 victory over West Ham United suggested they may be about to mount a first serious title challenge since Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Jose Mourinho’s side often dominated their opponents last season without being able to make it count, but it was a completely different story at a sun-kissed Old Trafford as a team spearheaded by new striker Romelu Lukaku put West Ham to the sword.

Lukaku scored twice, either side of half-time, before late goals from substitute Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba completed United’s most convincing opening-weekend win since a 5-1 demolition of Fulham in August 2006.

Arsenal’s defence is a mess
Goals from substitutes Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud earned Arsenal a thrilling 4-3 win over Leicester City, but there was no glossing over their defensive problems.

Leicester’s first and third goals came from simple corner routines, while their second stemmed from a loose pass by Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka.

Arsenal finished the game with midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at right-back, right-back Hector Bellerin at left-back and two left-backs — Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac — in central defence.

Laurent Koscielny remains suspended for next weekend’s trip to Stoke City and Gabriel is still sidelined, but Shkodran Mustafi and Per Mertesacker could return to give the defence a more conventional — and solid — appearance.

Liverpool might not miss Coutinho
Liverpool made a frustrating start to the season, denied victory in a 3-3 draw at Watford after Miguel Britos’s stoppage-time leveller for the hosts was allowed to stand despite an apparent offside.

At the other end of the pitch, however, Philippe Coutinho was not missed. The Brazil playmaker, absent due to a back injury, is the subject of strong interest from Barcelona, which has been met equally firmly by Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group, who are determined not to sell him.

But Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and new signing Mohamed Salah all scored and with Adam Lallana still to return from injury and Divock Origi, Daniel Sturridge and Dominic Solanke also at Jurgen Klopp’s disposal, if Coutinho were to leave, Liverpool might not miss him as much as their fans fear.

MUST READ: 'We Are Working Hard To Bring Back Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar' Adamawa PDP Says

PDP chapter in Adamawa state says they are working hard to bring back former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, into their fold.

The Adamawa State chairman of the party, Abdurrahman Bobboi, disclosed this at a press conference in Yola the state capital yesterday July 24th. Recall that Atiku defected from PDP to APC in February 2014.

His attempt to contest for presidency on the platform of the ruling party failed.

The Adamawa state PDP chairman told newsmen yesterday that the PDP national hierarchy and the state chapter are making a concerted effort to convince the former vice president and other founding fathers, who left the party to return.

“The former vice president was a founding member, was vice president under the PDP and he is resourceful. He has acquired vast experience and should not be abandoned. They’re working hard at the center and we are doing same here in his home state,” he said

According to Bobboi, APC has refused to allow Atiku with his vast knowledge help them find solutions to the challenges plaguing the country
“APC is not tapping his experience; we that know his resourcefulness will not give him breathing space until he returns,” he stated.

Bobboi further announced that a reconciliation committee  had been formed at the state level and  would be headed by former Governor Boni Haruna to  bring aggrieved members back to the party.

MUST READ: Shell shuts down key supply pipeline in Nigeria

Anglo-Dutch energy giant Shell said Tuesday it has shut down a key crude supply pipeline in Nigeria’s restive south because of a leak.

Shell subsidiary the Shell Petroleum Development Corporation of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) said the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP) was shut on July 21 at B-Dere in Ogoniland.

“Efforts are ongoing for a joint investigation visit to determine the cause of the leak and repair of the pipeline,” the company said in a statement.

The volume of production shut-in was not disclosed.

The TNP feeds the Bonny Light export terminal, which has a production capacity of 225,000 barrels per day of oil.

Militants and oil thieves in the region have repeatedly attacked the pipeline.

Community unrest forced Shell to quit oil production in Ogoniland in 1993 but the company still runs a network of pipelines criss-crossing the area.

A spokesman for the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) pressure group said it was not responsible for the latest shutdown.

“We are not involved in the incident we only heard about it. Our position however remains that Shell is not welcome on our land,” Fegalo Nsuke told AFP.

He called on Shell to address the issues of environmental degradation, neglect, injustice and under-development before considering the resumption of production in Ogoniland.

“If they want our oil, they have to take care of the people,” he added.

MOSOP founder Ken Saro-Wiwa was executed with eight other activists by Nigeria’s then-military government in November 1995 on trumped-up murder charges at a secret trial.

Many believed his conviction was politically motivated because of his opposition to Shell’s presence in Ogoniland, where there have been repeated oil spills.

In 2015, Shell agreed to pay £55 million ($72 million, 61 million euros) in compensation to more than 15,500 people in Ogoniland and agreed to start a clean-up of two major spills.

MUST READ: South Korea lifts court TV ban ahead of Park sentencing

South Korea’s Supreme Court on Tuesday lifted a ban on the filming of trials, opening the possibility of live TV coverage of the sentencing of disgraced president Park Geun-Hye and Samsung heir Lee Jae-Yong.

At a rare meeting of justices presided over by Chief Justice Yang Sung-Tae, the court adopted new regulations on filming of trials, effective August 1.

“With the amendment, live TV coverage of lower court and appeals court sentencings will be permitted”, it said.

The measure will help enhance the “people’s right to know”, it added.

Supreme Court spokesman Judge Cho Byung-Koo told us the move gives lower and appeal court judges a free hand in deciding whether to allow live TV coverage of verdicts and sentencings.

“If the courts decide in favour of allowing live transmissions on the grounds of public interest, the decision will overrule protests from the accused”, he said.

“But at moments of sentencing, TV cameras will be ordered to be angled to show the judge only, not the accused”, he said.

Following the decision, it is widely expected that live TV coverage of Park’s sentencing, expected in October, and Samsung heir Lee will be available.

The decision came after a groundswell of public opinion calling for live broadcasts in key trials such as those of Park and Lee.

The Supreme Court has only allowed live online streaming for its own rulings so far.

Park, 65, has been on trial over a sprawling corruption scandal that saw millions take to the streets and led to her downfall.

She was impeached by parliament in December after mass demonstrations demanding her removal over a scandal centred on her long-time friend Choi Soon-Sil and implicating some of the country’s top businessmen.

Park was detained soon after her dismissal and indicted on 18 charges including bribery, coercion and abuse of power for offering governmental favours to tycoons.

On her most serious count, Park is accused of taking or seeking bribes totalling 59.2 billion won ($52 million) for Choi or herself, most of which went to non-profit foundations which Choi controlled.

At Lee’s trial Tuesday, prosecutors said Park and Lee secretly met unaccompanied three times — in 2014, 2015 and last year — and discussed bribes in return for policy favours including government support for Lee’s succession to the business empire of his bed-ridden father Lee Kun-Hee.

But Lee’s lawyers dismissed the allegations as “groundless assumptions”.
Lee’s verdict and sentence is expected to come late August.
