MUST READ: Trump opens election panel with demand for voter data

President Donald Trump launched a highly controversial investigation into election integrity Wednesday, with a demand that reluctant US states turn over data about voters.

“This commission is tasked with the sacred duty of upholding the integrity of the ballot box and the principle of one citizen, one vote,” Trump said in launching the panel at the White House.

“Every time voter fraud occurs, it canceled out the vote of a lawful citizen and undermines democracy. You can’t let that happen.”

The panel was set up after Trump made unsubstantiated claims that his loss of the popular vote in the November elections was caused by voter fraud.

Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by a margin of three million ballots, but did not win the state-based electoral college tally that decides US elections.

“In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally,” Trump claimed in a November 27 tweet that prompted widespread outrage.

Experts say there is little evidence to support the idea that voter fraud is a significant problem.

Trump’s critics say the panel is cover for an assault on voting rights. In protest, many states have refused to hand over data to the Republican-led commission.

“I’m pleased that more than 30 states have already agreed to share the information with the commission and the other states, that information will be forthcoming,” Trump insisted.

“If any state does not want to share this information, one has to wonder what they’re worried about,” Trump said. “There’s something. There always is.”

The American Civil Liberties Union, a rights advocacy group, has initiated a series of legal challenges.

“The Trump administration are launching a nationwide assault on voting rights,” said Dale Ho, director of the ACLU’s voting rights project.

“Asking for details on every single voter in the US is deeply alarming and raises significant privacy concerns.

“States are right to balk at turning over massive reams of personal information in what clearly is a campaign to suppress the vote.”

Rights groups and democrats have long accused Republicans of trying to suppress the votes of poor and black voters via onerous ID and registration requirements.

MUST READ: 10 Reasons Why Nairobi women love Nigerian men so much

A Kenyan woman has listed the reasons Nairobi women admire Nigerian men and they are quite interesting!

According to Cate Mukei, Nairobi women love Nigerian men so much that they would walk through Sahara desert without water and food just to get one.

"Some even go to an extent of praying about on to their pastors or signing up to online platforms where they hope to find ogas. Naija brodas on the other hand seem to have mastered some of the weird reasons why our women love them and have perfected them."

Below are some of the reasons Nairobi women admire Naija brodas:

1. Bravado
These are the same men who can fly to Europe without a shilling and still survive without being arrested. Women love the dash of danger which makes them imagine how adventurous they can get in bed. Kenyan men on the other hand can't even go to shopping malls anymore because they are afraid of Alshabaab.

2. Talking big
Ikwechuku will promise you heaven and earth but hardly delivers and the ladies know it too. However, there is always that urge to hold on hoping that one day he will keep his word. Then again he is much better than Kamau who doesn't even talk about prospects of buying a bicycle.

3. Hyped lies
Ironically most ladies actually know when Olamide is lying but they still choose to stick with him. they probably hope that one day his lies will translate to all those riches and travel plans he has been talking about.

4.Carrot and stick tactics
Naija men can really treat a lady when they have the money but if you are planning to get on a long term plan with Obiajulu just be sure that you will pay for it at some point. A Nigerian man can pay your rent for a whole year but he will expect you to hold forte when things are thick.

5. Visa holders
Mogaka you can keep your Nyamira Express bus ticket we are flying to Lagos. Kenyan women naturally love visa holders. In fact they love anybody who was born beyond Eastern Africa. This is a free ticket to flying out of their country, taking selfies and filling our social media timelines in the name of having traveled 'abroad'.

6. Some are loaded
Not every Nigerian man is a poser. Some of them actually have real jobs, real money and outlined ambitions. Who would choose a broke Kenyan man over a loaded Naija broda?

7. Flashy
Chinedu owns a suit imported from Giorgio Armani headquarters in Italy although he lives in a Sh.15000 servants Quarter in Lavington. But who really cares about his two sufurias when he can show up in a chopper in your village. Omusakhulu on the other hand only owns one three buttoned oversize suit.

8. Random gifts
A Naija broda can buy you a Range Rover mid January. Although you might have to sell it some time in future for survival purposes, you must admit that he actually tried.A Kenyan man will only get you a gift when they cheat on you.

9. Promise to take them to Nigeria
If the furthest a woman has traveled in her lifetime is Mombasa, to finally set foot in Lagos, a city she has been watching on Naija movies is a dream come true. Flying out to visit in-laws in Port Harcourt is gisty compared to taking a matatu to Gaichanjiru.

10.They have time
Time automatically translates to attention and that's why they will notice that your tiny toe finger polish has chipped off. They are the same men who accompany their women to salons and wait for them to get their Peruvian weaves attached on their otherwise scanty natural hair. A Kenyan man doesn't even know his wife's best friend because he is rarely with her and when he is he automatically switches off because his woman is a nag.

MUST READ: FG to stop production of Nigerian movies, music, abroad

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government says it has taken steps to amend the Nigeria Broadcasting Code to discourage the production of Nigerian movies and music outside the shore of the country.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made this known on Saturday in Lagos when he paid a visit to the headquarters of the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON).

The Minister decried the situation whereby films, reality TV shows and music, were made outside Nigeria, for consumption by Nigerians.

He said the situation had hampered empowerment of practitioners in the industry, the development of the sector and the nation’s economy in general.

“This government has agreed that henceforth, whatever we consume in Nigeria in terms of music and films, must be made in Nigeria.

“We cannot continue to go to South Africa or any other country to produce our films and then send them back to be consumed in Nigeria.

“The Broadcasting Code and the Advertising Code are very clear on this.

“For you to classify a product as a Nigerian product, it must have a certain percentage of Nigerian content,” he said.

The Minister noted that what was happening today was that Nigerian artists were often flown out of this country to go and make their recordings.

“When they get there, they will patronise the economy of that country and then bring the products back to Nigeria for us to consume.

“It is like somebody going to China or Japan to make a product that looks like palm wine and bring it back home to label it Nigerian palm wine”.

He stressed that “as long as we are not able to implement our own code to ensure local production of Nigerian music and movies, , our young talents will not get jobs”.

“It is Nigerians that pay for the consumption of these products and therefore they must be allowed and encouraged to participate in their production.

“I am going to meet with the relevant stakeholders over this, to see that whatever amendment that is needed to be made to our Broadcasting Code in this regard, is done urgently, ” he said.

To encourage local production of films and music, the Minister said that Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission had put forward a proposal to classify the Creative Industry and grant it a pioneer status.

He said that with the pioneer status, the creative industry would be entitled to certain incentives and tax holiday.

The Minister said that there would also be waivers for shipment of imported music and films production equipment.

He stressed that the federal government was committed to making the creative industry viable, dynamic and sustainable.

Mohammed said that as one of the key areas for diversification of the economy, the creative industry would be private sector-driven, while government would create the enabling environment for its growth.
The Minister lauded COSON and its management team for achieving a lot in seven years of existence.

“I am very proud of COSON because in terms of excellence and competence, COSON can compete with any known international brand.

“COSON is operating in a tough environment where people believe that intellectual property of people belong to no one and is meant for the use of all, without compensation.

“The body has however done a lot in copyright royalty collection and distribution since its inception in 2010,.” he said.

Earlier, Chairman of COSON, Chief Tony Okoroji said that the Society was an umbrella body to fight copyright infringements.

He recalled that for many decades, music was broadcast freely on radio and TV stations across Nigeria, and dished out in hotels, as if they belonged to no one.

He said COSON was set up to manage the collection and distribution of royalties arising from the public and commercial use of musical works and sound recordings

He said COSON was being managed in transparent manner by professionals, and had distributed over half a billion Naira in royalties since its inception in 2010.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Okoroji, along with COSON management team, conducted the Minister and his entourage round the facilities at the headquarters of the organisation.

In the entourage of the Minister were, the Director Generals of Nigeria Television Authority, Yakubu Mohammed and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Dr Mansur Liman

Former long-serving Chelsea captain John Terry was named Aston Villa’s new skipper on Saturday after joining the second-tier side following his departure from Chelsea.

MUST READ: Schurrle strike gives Dortmund 3-2 win in Japan

Germany striker Andre Schurrle smashed a late winner as Borussia Dortmund beat Japan’s Urawa Reds 3-2 on their Far East preseason tour Saturday.

Turkey striker Emre Mor scored a quickfire double to cancel out Shinzo Kuroki’s volleyed opener, before Reds defender Wataru Endo restored parity with a free header five minutes from time in Saitama.

But there was still time for Schurrle to give Dortmund a winning start to their Asian tour as he rifled home from an acute angle with two minutes remaining, much to the relief of new Dortmund manager Peter Bosz.

Japan playmaker Shinji Kagawa, who dislocated his shoulder playing in a World Cup qualifier last month, did not play after extending his contract with the Bundesliga club until 2020 on Friday.

“I really wanted to get on but but we came here to win so it’s nice to get the result,” said the former Manchester United midfielder.

“It’s a new start for us so we all need to do is pull together and work hard for the new coach.”

Dortmund, who face a summer bidding war for striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with Chelsea and Liverpool reportedly the front-runners for the Gabon hitman’s signature, play AC Milan in Guangzhou on Tuesday.
